Washington Police are Investigating a Hate Crime Targeting the Black Owner of a Store [News]
A hate crime is under investigation for the new black store owner of Rags to Riches in downtown Redmond, Washington. Leona Coakley-Spring just opened her consignment store, Rags to Riches. While Coakley-Spring and her son were busy at the shop, a young white male dropped off what was supposed to be two dresses.
However to the store owner’s surprise, Coakley-Spring received what identified as an authentic Ku Klux Klan hood and robe. Her son immediately took pictures of his mother’s horrifying discovery and sent it to the police.
Coakley-Spring told Fox Q13, “I didn't know what to do and what to say, it was just so horrifying.” Coakley-Spring said, “I can't change the way I look but it makes me feel like I'm not good enough.” She was scared enough to close her store but her son did not allow her. He said, "We close the store they would win and I don't wanna give them any satisfaction."
Fox Q13 reported that the store will stay open, new cameras are being installed and Redmond police will increase patrol in the area.
In the early and mid 1900’s, white superior community leaders around the United States worked with the Ku Klux Klan. They would perform similar and more extreme tactics such as this to exclude people from different races, nationalities, religions and other backgrounds from owning businesses, voting and even buying homes in their better neighborhoods.
Miss. Ty: This young white man is trying to instill fear of the Ku Klux Klan as it was throughout the 1900's. We must not go back, only progression.
