New York City Changes Policy For Small Possession of Marijuana/Weed

NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton announced Monday that Police in New York City will begin writing tickets instead of handcuffing people caught with small amounts of marijuana. The NYPD has been making tens of thousands of arrests every year for low-level marijuana crimes.

Being that 86% of that arrest were of colored people, it has drawn an outcry from activists. Last year alone, the NYPD arrested more than 28,000 people for marijuana possession.

NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio said the city heard their cry and this is part of a broader effort towards "building a closer relationship" between the public and the police department. Black and Latino communities have been disproportionately affected by the city's current marijuana policy."

Police will now be able to just issue tickets to people caught with up to 25 grams of weed, allowing them to continue on their way instead of being handcuffed and taken in for fingerprinting. Commissioner Bratton said people without proper identification, with an outstanding warrant, or people actively smoking weed in public will still be subject to arrest.

Mayor DeBlasio said the decision will still ultimately be up to the officer on the scene.

Which is the Main problem with this new policy as Sunny Hostin pointed out in the video above. The officer having the decision wether a citizen goes to jail or gets a ticket, can cause just as much or more racist problems. However, now it will be more difficult to identify it. She is speaking the Truth. New York is making a step in the right direction but giving officers that power will just cause more problems.
