Sony and Viacom Internet TV Deal

Viacom is a large tv production company that owns up to 15% percent of our tv channels like Nickelodeon and MTV. New work from Viacom and Sony has caused some national attention to what their doing. Sony is a top ranked fortune 500 company, that is best known for its work in electronics, games, and entertainment. Sony is coming out with their new game system “Play Station 4″. Sony is working with Viacom to setup a internet TV deal for the new system so it can have access to MTV and the other channels that Viacom owns.

“In a deal that may signal the start of a new era of competition for entrenched cable and satellite providers, Viacom has tentatively agreed to let its popular cable channels — like Nickelodeon and MTV — be carried by an Internet TV service that Sony is creating.”

This new info is threatening established television service like Comcast and Dish. If Sony can make a more efficient, and cheaper service then Comcast and Dish then people will definitely look into internet TV. As well with TV service available on the internet more features such as portable TV on a phone, tablet, and computer will be possible. Unless Comcast and other TV service companies stop this before existence or face the risk of becoming extinct.

“The agreement is believed to be the first of its kind between a major programmer and any of the technology giants that are trying to disrupt traditional modes of TV delivery.”

This story is important because if Sony succeeds with this process they will open opportunity for companies like Google, Hulu and more huge companies on the internet to get their hands on internet TV as well. This will put companies that have thrived through the development of TV such as DirectTV, Comcast, Time Warner, and newly added Verizon Wireless and AT&T to have new competition on their hands.
